The Canada Life Investment Department, based in the City of London manages in excess of £18 billion (October 2007). We are fundamentally a top down house, although some funds require more of a bottom up approach. First the economic environment is assessed and the impact on interest rates and exchange rates. A market view is taken, with preferred regions and sectors and then specific assets within these sectors. The basic stance on portfolio management is to adopt an active but relatively low risk approach. We aim to generate superior performance over the long term by being consistently above average rather than attempting to capture spectacular short-term relative returns. We pride ourselves on having a flexible investment style. We do not as a house follow a defined style such as “Growth”, “Value” or “Cyclical”. We have a good mix within the team from those with more value oriented preferences to growth investors and stock pickers. We know that no single style works all of the time.
