Meet Simone

She's in the 'danger-zone'

About Simone

Age:  52

Occupation: Airport customer relations manager

Optimism level:  Low

Simone has always enjoyed the buzz of working in an airport, but lately, she’s struggling to get her head into work. Everything seems to be getting on top of her, and she doesn’t know which way is up. She’s usually very positive at work and in her personal life, often known for her bubbly personality, but she’s feeling less like herself. She’s noticed that she’s becoming more irritable and is struggling to concentrate at work. Simone is exhausted, as she’s busy caring for everyone else. She hasn’t recognised that she might need some additional support.

What our research says about Simone

  • The ‘danger-zone’ of work optimism starts in our mid-40s and continues until at least our late 50s and mid-60s (dropping to 38% and then further to 19%)

  • Least motivated by career progression

  • Most motivated by personal satisfaction and fulfilment

  • Only 38% feel work will improve

Family

Simone has a daughter who lives in North London. She visits often, especially since Simone’s mother has been in ill health after suffering a stroke. Simone tries to care for her mother as much as she can by accompanying her to appointments and helping her at home. But she has noticed lately that her mother is struggling with her mobility, and Simone worries about her living alone. Simone’s sister lives abroad and her father passed away five years ago, so there isn’t anyone else who can help.

Motivations

It’s been a long time since Simone has reflected on what motivates her or what she needs. She’s the person who takes care of everyone else, including her daughter and mother. She’s used to juggling her job and family, but she often wonders what it would be like to have some time to herself. Whenever she catches herself thinking about it, she feels guilty. But she can’t help but wonder if there’s more to life than going through the motions.

Wellbeing

Simone has been feeling more anxious than usual, and although it could be down to what’s happening at home, she thinks it might be something more. She’s experiencing hot flushes, night sweats and is struggling to concentrate. She’s usually on top of things and very organised, but lately, she’s had brain fog. She’s also experiencing mood swings, going from feeling calm to feeling very irritable in a short space of time. She doesn’t know if she should speak to anyone about how she’s feeling.
