What does International Women's Day mean to you personally?

For me personally, International Women's Day is a moment to pause and reflect on the areas in the world and in my life where equity is still lacking. As a parent of twins—a daughter and a son—I am deeply invested in creating a future where my daughter has equal access to opportunities, can confidently express herself in meetings, can walk the streets without fear, and can pursue her dreams without fear of judgement. At the same time, I recognise that gender balance is not solely a woman's issue. It is equally important to me that my son grows up with an inclusive mindset, understanding the value of equality and respect for all genders.

Gender balance is not solely a woman's issue.

What can we do as individuals to accelerate gender equality and drive a greater pace of change?

Working in this space it can feel challenging to talk about gender equality, and at times, I feel like I am not doing enough or pushing hard enough. However, progress is being made in society, and I believe it is essential to remain optimistic and courageous in our efforts. A few things we can do to accelerate gender equality include:

  • Offer support and mentorship to women and underrepresented colleagues. By sharing your experiences and providing guidance, we can help others navigate their careers and overcome obstacles. I never had a mentor in my career and feel this held me back in some respects. Now I’m older and wiser I’d encourage anyone to find a mentor.
  • Challenge bias and stereotypes: Actively challenge gender biases and stereotypes whenever we encounter them, whether at work, at home, or out with friends. Do you see a colleague being constantly interrupted in meetings? Have the courage to speak up and address the behaviour.

Change takes time, and I believe it’s important to stay persistent and patient. Celebrate small victories and continue pushing for progress, even when it feels slow.
