Life100+ the story so far

Longer lives are changing the financial-planning landscape.

The story so far

Longer lives are changing the financial-planning landscape. Clients are living for longer, supporting family across more generations and making decisions about wealth at different points in their lives. For advisers, this creates both a challenge and an opportunity: helping clients balance their own future financial security with the desire to make a difference for the people they care about.

Life100+ is Canada Life’s ongoing exploration of what living longer means for people, businesses and financial advice. Through research, insight and practical adviser resources, it considers how longevity is reshaping the decisions people make about work, retirement, care, family support and legacy.

Our research uses both qualitative and quantitative methods with consumers and advisers. This helps us understand the experiences, motivations and concerns shaping client decisions, alongside advisers’ awareness of those needs and the areas where they may need further insight, tools or support. By bringing these perspectives together, Life100+ helps identify and bridge the gap between the issues clients are facing and the conversations advisers need to be ready to have.

Three phases of Life100+

Introducing the longevity megatrend

Exploring Longevity

Life100+ began by introducing longevity as a defining societal and economic trend. It established the concept that living longer is not simply about adding years to life. It has implications for how people work, save, spend, plan for retirement and think about their future.

The first phase created a platform for a broader conversation: if living to 100 becomes more common, how should individuals, organisations and society prepare?

The implications for UK businesses

Building Longevity-ready Workplaces.

The second phase turned attention to the workplace and the economy. It explored what longer living could mean for UK businesses, including changing workforce expectations, multigenerational teams, financial wellbeing and the evolving needs of customers. It highlighted that longevity is not a distant issue for businesses to observe. It is already influencing the people they employ, the customers they serve and the products and services they provide.

NEW Phase 3: financially secure futures

Phase 3 is a new wave of research released in chapters in October 2026, it will explore financial planning in the light of longevity. It explores the practical and human decisions people face as longer lives reshape retirement, care, intergenerational wealth and financial security.

For many clients, wealth transfer is no longer simply an inheritance question. They may want to support children or grandchildren with housing, education or financial resilience during their lifetime, whilst also considering their own income, health and possible care needs over many more years.

This creates a more complex advice conversation. Clients are balancing equally valid priorities: protecting their own long-term security and helping loved ones at a time when support could have the greatest impact.

The adviser opportunity

Life100+ encourages advisers to move beyond the question, “How much do you want to leave?” and towards a more holistic conversation:

  • Who matters most to the client?
  • What do they want their wealth to achieve?
  • When could support make the greatest difference?
  • What must they retain to remain financially secure throughout a longer life?

By understanding the person behind the planning need, advisers can help clients make informed, sustainable decisions for themselves and the people they care about.

How we are supporting advisers
