Sam's story

Behind every pension is a person

  • Occupation: Retired
  • Age: 74

Meet Sam

Sam retired at the age of 72 and has been enjoying his retirement. It has taken him a little while to get used to a different routine and find things to occupy his time. Sam always thought he would retire earlier but as he entered his 60s, he wasn’t financially ready to. He requested retirement quotes through OneView a couple of times, but each time, he changed his mind. Now, he’s enjoying having more free time. He’s even planning a once-in-a-lifetime trip with his brother that they’ve talked about since they were kids. They didn’t have the money to travel when they were younger, but they’ve both contributed into their pensions throughout their working life and can now afford to make the trip.

This is what we don’t know about Sam

After a recent health check-up at his GP surgery, Sam discovered that he has type 2 diabetes. He’s known for a little while that this might happen because of his blood test results, but now that it’s official, he’s worried about how it will affect his health. The GP reassures him that, with the right diet and exercise, he can gain control of his diabetes. Sam hasn’t been as active since he retired, as he hasn’t needed to go out as much. But now he is more determined than ever to improve his fitness so that he can enjoy his holiday.
