Secure Income with no Pension Savings or investments in Pension Drawdown

Information about the planned move for your Secure Income, how your income will continue, your other options, and what you need to do next.

Who this page is for

This page is for you if you hold Secure Income but do not currently have:

  • Pension Savings
  • Any investments in your Pension Drawdown account

You still have a Pension Drawdown account because Canada Life pays your Secure Income into it. However, there are no investments held in that account.

Your letter and Account Summary show what you currently hold. If you are unsure whether this is the right page for you, check those documents before continuing.

What is planned for your account

We plan to move your Secure Income and Pension Drawdown account into a new Canada Life drawdown account on the date shown in your letter. Canada Life will continue making your Secure Income payments, and they will be paid gross of any income tax into the new account, in the same way they are paid into your Retirement Account now.

You will be able to take money from the new account as you do today. If you currently receive a regular withdrawal, the existing instruction will continue automatically.

Secure Income that you do not withdraw will be able to remain within the new drawdown account and be invested using the limited selection of funds available through it.

You do not need a financial adviser for the planned move to go ahead, and you will not need one to manage the new account afterwards. But we recommend speaking with a financial adviser if you’re unsure about the planned move or want to understand the other options available to you.

If you’re comfortable with the planned move and the information in your Account Summary is correct, you do not need to contact us. If you've already asked us to transfer your Retirement Account to another provider, to withdraw all of your pension savings, or to buy an annuity, the process you've started will continue as normal.

What happens if you do nothing

If we don’t receive another instruction before the date shown in your letter, we’ll open your new Canada Life drawdown account, move any funds, and start paying your Secure Income into it. We’ll continue making your payments gross of any income tax. Once the new account has been set up, we will send you:

  • Your new account number
  • Information about how to view and manage your account online
  • The new account’s terms and conditions
  • Information about the charges that apply
  • Details of where to go for support

If you decide afterwards that the new account isn’t right for you, you can still choose one of the other options below. But because The Retirement Account is closing, you won’t be able to move back to it.

Your other options

You do not have to follow the planned move to the new Canada Life Drawdown account. The other options available to you are:

  • Having your Secure Income converted into a Canada Life Lifetime Annuity
  • Transferring to the Parmenion SIPP

Both options work differently from the planned move and may change how your Secure Income is held, paid and taxed.

Your letter and Customer Guide will confirm the options available to you, the process to follow and the deadline for Canada Life to receive any required instruction. Some steps can take time to complete, so it is important to begin the process early if you want to choose another option.

Important information

There are some important things to understand about the planned move and how your new Canada Life Drawdown account will work.

What you should do now

  • Check the planned move date and deadline shown in your letter
  • Read your Account Summary and tell us if anything is wrong, missing or has changed
  • Check the Secure Income and regular withdrawal information shown in your Account Summary
  • Read your Customer Guide, or the sections that apply to you
  • Speak to a financial adviser if you are unsure which option is right for you

If you want to choose another option, begin the relevant process in good time. Canada Life must receive any required instruction before the deadline shown in your letter.

If you are comfortable with the planned move and your Account Summary is correct, you do not need to contact us.

Your Customer Guide gives you the full explanation of the planned move to the new Canada Life drawdown account, what is expected to stay the same and what will change, how your Secure Income will continue, your other options, and what to expect before and after the move. Please read it alongside your letter and Account Summary.
