Accessibility

This website is designed and built to W3C accessibility standards. This website strives to allow equal access to people with disabilities using technologies other than standard web browsers, such as assistive technologies, for example, screen readers.

You can control:

  • The size of the text
  • The style sheets which enable you to change the colours

Navigation

There are two main navigation areas within the site, the global navigation, which is located above the search box at the top of the page and the main navigation located in the red bar below the global navigation. This in-turn opens drop down menus.

Some pages may have section navigation located on the left or right hand side of the page.

Layout

Text is laid out using style sheets. Users can change the style sheets in their browsers to make viewing easier for their individual requirements, such as colours.

To do this first go to the Tools menu for Internet Explorer. At the bottom of the Tools screen there is an accessibility button. Clicking this will bring up the accessibility dialogue where you can turn off the styles of the webpage. Here you can also direct Internet Explorer to use a style sheet of your choice. HTML used is 4.0 transitional.

For Mozilla: Go to the Tools screen, select Options and then Content. With Mozilla there are lots of accessibility add ons.

For Google Chrome: This can be customised by going to Settings/Show Advanced Settings/Web content.

Text

The Canada Life website uses relative text sizing. Users can apply their own text size and style as they have defined within their browser settings. These settings will be applied to the website on opening.

If you are using Internet Explorer 7 and above you can use CTRL + to increase text and CTRL - to decrease.

Images

The Canada Life website uses alternative text tags on all images that have a descriptive element. Where images are non-descriptive alternative text tags are set to null.
