Join us as we discover the aspirations and challenges of people across the UK as they plan for later life, as well as for the here and now.
A global demographic shift is happening all around us. Worldwide, 459 million people will be 80 years old or above by 2050 – almost triple those in 2021. Closer to home, we’re already breaking records. In 2022, the number of people in England and Wales aged 90 and above reached considerably north of half a million – the largest cohort to date, despite the effects of the pandemic. And over the next 25 years, we should expect to see a 200% increase in the number of centenarians in the UK.
Our Life100+ research shows that many of us aren’t giving enough thought to our later years, including how we’ll fund them. While more than two-thirds (69%) of people across the UK believe retiring in our sixties will become a thing of the past, less than half (only 48%) agree that living longer means that we should work longer.
We need to rethink how we plan for our lives to come, and the importance of planning can’t be overemphasised.
By planning well and leveraging the power of conversation – most especially in the areas of close relationships and financial advice – we’ll be better placed to take full advantage of the opportunities that lie ahead.

Three core themes have emerged in our research: the power of conversation, the power of advice, and the power of those close to us.
We’ve found that each of these contributes to a greater sense of control – and by consequence, to higher levels of overall life satisfaction.
Quality conversations with those close to us, as well as with professional advisers, will be key to making the most of a longer life.
The demand for financial advice exists, but people often turn to family, the internet and well-known personalities rather than IFAs.
Our close family and friends are the foundation of much of the support needed through major life events and stages.
The internationally acclaimed choreographer and theatre director, Dame Arlene Phillips DBE, has explored our Life100+ report and we’re delighted to share her thoughts on our research on living longer lives. Read her full reflections on the Life100+ report here.

Almost one in five (19%) 18–34-year-olds have used, or plan to use, inheritance they’re expecting to buy a property.
